  • Scientific research

detect invasive algae, coral bleaching, presence of coral-killing starfishes, analyse interactions of species, seafloor patchiness.

  • Make the invisible visible

explore and gather information about the unknown 95% of our oceans and secure standardized data for future generations, incl. baseline data

Our Underwater Satellite

Our Underwater Satellite is able to automatically scan and map the seafloor, as well as man-made underwater constructions. It combines hyperspectral and RGB imaging with underwater navigation and artificial intelligence. The technology can be trained to identify and map many things, incl. plastic waste pollution on the seafloor, the effect of climate change on the health status of our seafloor, the degradation of underwater constructions, presence of invasive algae, biodiversity, the effectivenss of seafloor restoration efforts, algal growth for biofuels etc. Our Underwater Satellite quickly scans seafloor areas in high detail (i.e., pixel size mm to cm).

The Underwater Satellite reduces the time needed to map a detailed seafloor area by up to 50%, does not subsample, and any experienced diver can independently operate it underwater whilst recording the highest data quality. As such, our technology can be used for long-time monitoring of seafloor areas, to conduct environmental impact analyses and to inspect underwater constructions with high precision and at low cost. Furthermore, our Underwater Satellite is not limited to only experts. Soon our technology will also become diver-independent.

In the figure below, the characteristics of detailed traditional seafloor monitoring are compared to our Underwater Satellite.

The magic of our planblue® software

The obtained data from our Underwater Satellite is very rich in quantity and quality (i.e., big data). Our software can tailor the data for your purposes and extract the information you want (i.e., smart data). The data can be re-used and compared any time in the future as the raw data never changes. You can feed your expert knowledge into the software and automate your workflow gathering your results in real-time. The data can be also presented in the form of interactive color-coded maps. Depending on your question(s), features on the maps can be highlighted (e.g., where are invasive algae, where can I best build underwater, what is the impact of a nearby construction site or sewage plant?).

Advantages of our planblue® technology

  • Geo-referenced data

Our data is geo-referenced making it easier to find the right areas to monitor, locate interesting areas after monitoring, or returning to areas for comparative studies (i.e., laying out transect lines is no longer needed)

  • Automated analysis & objective assessment

Our technology prevents labor-intensive data entry and interpretation by standardizing and automating data collection and processing using Artificial Intelligence. Our technology provides a purely objective assessment of the seafloor enabling an optimal fusion and comparability of datasets. Therefore, our technology will ultimately not need to rely on the capabilities of the expert performing and analyzing the survey.

  • Interactive seafloor maps

Our software is capable of tailoring big data to your purposes. It visualizes results in interactive seafloor maps highlighting your focus of interest.

  • Cost-efficient

Since detailed seafloor data acquisition and analysis is up to 50% faster, and can be done by anyone that can dive, our technology is a highly cost-efficient monitoring technology.

  • Fast seafloor monitoring

A seafloor area of approximately 40m2 can be monitored in high detail in 60 seconds using our Underwater Satellite (i.e, it monitors at the speed of diving). This is several orders of magnitude faster than many traditional monitoring technologies, which can take up to 60 minutes to survey the same seafloor area.

  • Full coverage of the seafloor

Our technology surveys the entire seafloor (i.e., each pixel recorded is information). Traditional technologies often study only sections of pictures or video material obtained, which is then extrapolated as if the entire seafloor is studied.

  • Versatility & easy operation

Any underwater surface can be scanned with our Underwater Satellite (e.g. biodiversity, (plastic) waste, underwater constructions). The obtained data is highly versatile. It can be re-used and re-analysed any point in time. Currently, our technology can be operated by any diver, no experts are needed. In the future, our technology will be mounted on underwater robotics (e.g., autonomous monitoring).
